Service Leadership Programs
​K-Kids
K-Kids provides elementary school students the opportunity to work together in service to school and community. As a result, young people learn at an early age the value of helping others. A key goal is to foster the development of strong moral character.

Time Commitment: 1-3 hours, once or twice a month.

Terrific Kids
Terrific Kids is a student recognition program for elementary school children that promotes character development, self-esteem, and perseverance. TERRIFIC is an acronym for Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive, and Capable. Students who have excelled in reaching established goals are recognized monthly or quarterly.
Time Commitment: 2-3 hours per month or quarter, depending on the school.

Builder’s Club
Builder’s Club is a parallel program with K-Kids, but with middle school students. The goal is to develop competent, capable, caring leaders through the vehicle of service. Members learn to work together and develop servant-leader skills.

Time Commitment: 1-3 hours, once or twice a month.

Key Club
Key Club members are high school students who perform a wide variety of service projects in their schools and communities. The objectives mirror those of Builder's Club.

Time Commitment: 1-3 hours, once or twice a month.

CKI (Circle K) (Currently Inactive)
​
CKI is the world’s largest, student-led collegiate service organization. Students work together to build fellowship and develop leaders within their membership while raising funds for various community causes.

Time Commitment: 1-3 hours, once or twice a month.

​
Aktion Club
Aktion Club is a service leadership program that provides adults 18 years or older living with disabilities opportunities to give back to their communities, build leadership and decision-making skills, and develop their talents. In conjunction with the Kiwanis Club of North Brunswick and the Key Club of Brunswick County Early College/High School, our club helped establish an Aktion Club at Brunswick County Community College in Bolivia.

​Time Commitment: 4 hours of monthly meetings, plus time on community service and fundraising events.

​
Ramps and Pathways
Through play and exploration, R&P engages young children in the creation of constructs using wooden ramps and marbles. By using science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) concepts, children learn how to work together as a team and build a structure for the marble to descend. Kiwanis members provide ideas and input without “building” the constructs for the children.

Time Commitment: Usually no more than 1-2 hours, depending on the location of the activity.
First 2000 Days (Currently Inactive)
In the first 2000 days of a child’s life, the brain architecture is forming, creating either a strong or a weak foundation for all future learning. Brain development occurs in the context of relationships, experiences, and environments. We work with the North Carolina Early Childhood Foundation and Smart Start of Brunswick County in support of this concept.

Young Children Priority One
Priority One programs are geared toward preschool children to help ensure they are ready to enter school and succeed. A primary goal is to instill a love of reading in children while providing positive adult role models.

Time commitment: Sessions generally run for 2 hours.
Educational Assistance
Royal Readers
Royal Readers promotes reading and comprehension skills for first graders by having them read to Kiwanis volunteers, with the goal being for the student read a specified number of books within the school year. At the end of the school year, students who reach their goal participate in an ice cream social hosted by our club.

Time Commitment: 1 hour per week, excluding travel time to a participating school.

​Scholarships
The Club provides about $25,000 in academic scholarships annually to students who plan to attend post-secondary programs, including 2- and 4- year college or university and professional or technical programs.

Time Commitment: Generally 2-3 hours per school, depending on number of applications.
​​

Interview Day
​
Interview Day is a one-day event used to teach students of Brunswick County Early College High School basic interviewing techniques via mock interviews. Kiwanians s interview students as if they were actual job applicants in a general job fair setting.

Time Commitment: One day per semester otaling approximately 5 hours.
​
​
Tutoring/Mentoring
Subject-specific, one-on-one assistance to students struggling with particular subjects, as
​identified by teachers or counselors from the schools.
​
Time Commitment: Typically 2-3 hours per week, based on the needs of the school and the member’s schedule.
​
​
Proctoring
Third-party monitoring of student achievement tests to ensure academic integrity.
​​
Time Commitment: Generally 3-4 hours in length, twice during the school year.
International & District Service Projects
​
Boys & Girls Homes Of North Carolina At Lake Waccamaw
The homes provide residential foster care, adoption services, shelter, and guidance for boys and girls from distressed families throughout the state. The Carolinas District of Kiwanis supports the Kiwanis Cottage, which houses up to eight girls or boys.

Time Commitment: Afternoon, evening or weekend a few times a year.

First Tee
The club partners with First Tee, a national program, to instruct young people on First Tee’s Nine Core Values, which are designed to build character and healthy habits through the game of golf.

Time Commitment: Sessions run 2-3 hours and are hosted at local schools.
​
​
Listening Post
A middle school program that enables interested students to speak confidentially with a Kiwanis volunteer about any issue or concern the student may have. The goal is to allow children to share their concerns, sorrows, joys, and accomplishments in a non-judgmental environment, or to simply have a positive interaction with an adult.

Time Commitment: Generally 3 hours, travel time included. Held at local middle schools during student lunch periods.

Teen Court
An alternative system of justice for first-time offenders of high-school age, Teen Court requires defendants to accept responsibility for their misconduct by pleading guilty to the charge(s) against them and agreeing to comply with the sentence imposed by a jury of their peers (9th-12th graders). Students serve as attorneys, jurors, and bailiffs for the "trials." By participating, the defendants avoid a criminal record. Kiwanians serve as jury monitors and assist participants as needed.

Time Commitment: 2-3 hours, one evening per month.

Peer Court (Currently Inactive)
The same as Teen Court, but at the middle school level (ages 11-14).

Leadership Development Programs
Leadership Development Programs offer focused training on specific leadership skills and civics-oriented education.

Boys & Girls State
Boys State and Girls State are summer programs for high school students that are focused on leadership and citizenship. The events are sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary. Our Kiwanis Club provides funding, allowing deserving students between their junior and senior years of high school an opportunity to attain leadership skills and build citizenship.

HOBY
HOBY is a youth leadership development program founded by actor Hugh O’Brien for high school sophomores with leadership potential. Community leaders educate students on a variety of subjects as varied as leadership, politics, the media, and volunteerism. Our club provides funding for deserving young people. ​

Trooper School
Trooper School is sponsored by the NC American Legion and the NC Highway Patrol. Its goal is to create an association between young people and the men and women who are responsible for enforcing the laws of our state. Our club provides funding so local high school students can attend.
​
​
Key Leader
Key Leader is a Kiwanis-sponsored leadership-training seminar offered annually as a weekend-long retreat activity for high school students, with the goal of giving students an opportunity to attain leadership and team-building skills. Our club provides funding for selected attendees from local high schools, as well as adult supervision for the event.
​
Time Commitment: One weekend per year.
Community Support
The Club supports a variety of community activities throughout the year that provide for the health and welfare of Brunswick County residents.

Meals on Wheels
The Meals on Wheels program provides meals to homebound adults. Kiwanis members assist by delivering the meals, providing a valuable service to the community and touching the lives of needy individuals.
​
Time Commitment: Morning deliveries from approximately 10 a.m. – noon.
​​
​
Giving Garden
The Kiwanis Giving Garden is located on the grounds of Horseplay Farms. The vegetables grown are provided to various area nonprofits serving the food insecure. Vegetables are planted and maintained by members of several Kiwanis programs, including Circle K (CKI) at Brunswick Community College, three high school Key Clubs, the Aktion Club of Brunswick County, and the Builder’s Club, along with volunteers and staff of Horseplay Farms and other club members. Kiwanians also apply for grants, research plants, deliver food to local nonprofits, and supervise student activities.

Matthew’s Ministry
Matthew's Ministry provides food to children at 13 different schools in Brunswick County, helping to ensure children don't go hungry through it's Backpack Program.

Time Commitment: 1-2 hours, assisting with the preparation of the backpacks.

Food Pantry
Brunswick County Food Pantries provide nutrition for the food insecure. In addition to collecting and donating funds, Kiwanis volunteers work in the pantries.
​
Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per session.

​
Providence Home
Providence Home is the only emergency shelter for youth in Brunswick County, providing shelter, food, and clothing, as well as attending to the medical, educational, emotional, recreational, and spiritual needs of several hundred Brunswick County youth since 1997. In addition to providing financial support, club members periodically help with landscaping and upkeep.

New Hope Clinic
​
New Hope Clinic provides free healthcare services to adults in Brunswick County who lack health insurance, Medicare or Medicaid. It serves approximately 1,000 people annually, representing about 10% of all eligible adults in the county. It offers quality medical, dental, health education, and pharmacy services in a patient-centered setting.

Fundraising/Community Events
The Club’s service projects and scholarships are funded entirely through a variety of annual fundraising efforts. The net results from all of our fundraising efforts go directly to our various service activities.
​
Big Toy Day
Big Toy Day is a one-day community event held at the Cape Fear Regional Jetport. Large equipment such as fire engines, bucket trucks, rescue boats, airplanes, swamp boats, construction equipment and more so kids can see, climb on and learn about numerous “big toys.” for the enjoyment of the local community. In addition, food vendors and kids’ activities such as Ramps & Pathways, First Tee, inflatables and free airplane rides are available throughout the day.

Golf Tournament
The club sponsors a golf outing each year to raise funds in support of club programs. This is traditionally our biggest fundraiser.

Special Events Series
The club sponsors four, 1-hour events annually covering topics of interest to the community. 100% of ticket sales are placed in an endowment fund used for the club's Scholarship Program.

Show Our Colors
The Club sponsors a fund-raising program involving the display of flags for 5 federal holidays (Labor Day, Veterans Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day and July 4th). For subscribers, Kiwanians will place the Flag Unit in your front yards for 3 days prior to the holiday and remove it 4 days after.

​Time Commitment: Approximately 2 hours for both flag placement and removal.

Southport Spring Festival
​
The Southport Spring Festival, held for almost three decades, is sponsored by Downtown Southport, the Southport-Oak Island Kiwanis Club, and the City of Southport. Thousands of residents and visitors from local towns across North Carolina and the East Coast attend the annual Festival.
